On Monday, January 2, 2023, Tesla announced the number of electric cars delivered in the last quarter of 2022. Apparently, the automaker managed to deliver 405,278 electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of last year. This is a new record for the company since at the same period the previous year, Tesla had delivered only 308,600 cars.
Although this figure is a new record for the automaker, analysts believed that Tesla would deliver many more electric cars. Indeed, on December 30, analysts had estimated that Tesla would deliver around 418,000 cars in the fourth quarter of 2022.
A new record broken despite many obstacles
Tesla said Model 3s and Model Ys make up a large portion of the 405,278 electric cars delivered in the fourth quarter of 2022. Additionally, 388,131 of those cars would have been delivered to customers before the end of the year. The Model S and Model X represent 17,147 of these deliveries.
Even if the analysts’ estimate turned out to be wrong, it’s worth remembering that Tesla had to overcome quite a few hurdles in 2022, including macroeconomic and logistical challenges that threatened to slow its growth. In addition, the restrictions linked to Covid-19 in China also forced the automaker to suspend and then reduce production at its Gigafactory in Shanghai. At the end of the quarter, Tesla struggled to transport completed cars.
The acquisition of Twitter had implications for Tesla
In addition, you should know that Elon Musk’s decision to acquire Twitter had an impact on the automaker. Indeed, repeated sales of Tesla shares have led to the company’s stock value plummeting.
As recently as December, Tesla shares fell 33%. But the value of those shares later rose in anticipation of the automaker’s results last quarter. In any case, Tesla will release its full fourth quarter 2022 results on January 25. It will also host its annual Investor Day presentation on 1er March 2023.
