As part of improving this function, Google has partnered with the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the European Environment Agency.

Google kills two birds with one stone

Thanks to this feature, Google prevents the emission of more than one million tons of carbon dioxide and gives the opportunity to save fuel. The Mountain View firm explained that the most fuel-efficient route varies depending on the type of engine the driver has. By noting the type of engine, Google Maps will highlight the routes that consume the least energy.

In the coming weeks, we will allow drivers using eco-routing in Europe, the United States and Canada to select their engine type, i.e. petrol or gas, diesel, hybrid or electric vehicle; to get the best route and the most accurate fuel consumption or fuel efficiency estimates said Google.

How can Google Maps provide this information?

The system that Google has put in place is based on information extracted from NREL and the European Environment Agency. And the scheme is complemented with Maps driving trends to train machine learning models based on the most popular engines in given regions.

Thus, diesel-powered vehicles will be geared towards a high-speed highway, where their engines will be more efficient. While hybrid or electric vehicles will be directed to surface roads where they can better take advantage of regenerative braking.
